Last night was poker night at my friend Sean Dillons house. (Make sure to read this all of the way through, some big news to announce!) All of the usual suspects were there, including Mark Piermarini (frequent contributor to asktom with answers to things Java related, as you can see - he was doing pretty good in the beginning of the evening) And Tyler Muth (frequent contributor of

Totally free installation...
Tom Kytes Blog
Ok, I?m supposed to be getting a dedicated T1 line installed today. Never mind that no one can tell me when they might show up. Never mind that no one can tell me if they are going to show up (you would think their dispatch system might have some clue ? but no). But the best part, I?m talking with the guy only to discover that the installation will take only a couple of seconds on their

Working With Consultants
ERP Channel

Reasons to use consultants on an ERP implementation:

  • Augmenting staff to work on extra work
  • Adding expertise in areas where knowledge is lacking
  • Management will sometimes appreciate an opinion from someone without any strong biases
  • Consultants can be employed to do work no one else will do

Hiring consultants is a bargain when they are used to provide expertise to a one time project where the costs of creating the knowledge internally are too high.

Expectations - Yours and the Consultants:

  • Before a consulting engagement begins make sure a timeline and budget are developed and agreed upon
  • Make sure when hiring a consultant the focus of there work is defined before they arrive and they remain focused on there job; this will allow you to realize maximum value for your dollar. Many times I see consultants hired for a limited engagement end up working on a number of projects that were never intended. This will certainly increase the consulting cost to your company and extend the time needed for the original project.
  • Consultants should be focused on problem solving and analysis - to help them focus, prepare documentation and reports before they arrive to get them up to speed as quick as possible. Help the consultant understand your business as best as possible. Give them an overview of your organization - market, products, project stakeholders, etc., and also share with them the organizational priorities. The time involved in getting any consultant up to speed on your companies procedures can be substantial - preparation can speed things up and help the consultant do a better job.

When hiring any consultants make sure your expectations are known early in your relationship. Develop a budget and timeline for all projects. Stay involved and do all you can to allow the consultant to focus on the task at hand.

10G DB Console Administration Toolset
Chris Foot Oracle 10g Blog
Readers of this blog know how important I think 10G Grid Control is to the future of Oracle database administration. DBAs must learn to leverage the intelligence built into the Grid Control product set to reduce the amount of time they spend administering, monitoring and troubleshooting Oracle databases.

That being said, there are times when you don't have access to a full blown, enterprise-wide Grid Control environment. Not to worry, Oracle also provides the 10G Database Control administration toolset. 10G Database Control can be used to effectively administer a single Oracle database. Although 10G Database Control might not have the enterprise-wide scope that Grid Control does, it does provide a very robust set of features and functions that are guaranteed to make database administrators more productive. This blog will provide you with a brief overview of the 10G Database Control product set. We'll also compare and contrast Database Control to its big brother, Grid Control.

The first half of this week I'm in Omaha, Nebraska speaking at a conference and doing some customer visits. Jonathan Lewis was traveling to the same conference as well. Got an email from his wife on Sunday morning - there was a good chance Jonathan would not be able to make the conference as he was at Heathrow scrambling for a ticket. Turns out due to something strange on the web site he used
