| Hello all. My company has decided to go with the comprehensive suite of oracle apps and we now need to choose a hardware platform. We are considering all options. From what I have researched thus far, however, we are laning toward hp-ux. Sun is also another strong contender. I was wondering what everyone else is running on production as far as a unix flavor (wintel is out for us.) I would definitely appreciate any links or reviews that you might know of that could show objective reasons for choosing one platform over another, and definitely welcome opinions from those who have experience across several unix platforms. Thanks in advance! |

The company I work for recently purchased a large SUN box for over a $ 1,000,000 . The machine is only 4 months old and it has had a hardware failure 3 times. We have SUN support that guarrentees a 2 hour response time with parts and service. In two of the three failures they did not have the part in stock and we had to wait a day. We have not had these problems with older SUN machines. In addition, I talked to a hardware engineer that used to work on those SUN machines and found out in fact the bean counters have gotten hold of the quality and were substituting $35 board for a board that used to cost $50. False economy. In the past I would have said either one are good machines. Now I am afraid not, SUN has gone to the bean counters, look elsewhere. Jim |

If it is my employers money and they didn't want Linux I'd suggest focusing on HP (HP/UX) and IBM (AIX 5L). I have the same reservations Jim has expressed. Sun seems to be losing focus on what it is they are selling and what their customer's expect. IBM will try to gently push you toward DB2 or Informix; that's their job, but if you are focused on Oracle and let them know you aren't interested, they sell a very decent piece of hardware with, what I think are, the best CPUs in performance/dollars. -- Daniel Morgan http://www.outreach.washington.edu/e...ad/oad_crs.asp http://www.outreach.washington.edu/e...oa/aoa_crs.asp damorgan-at-x.washington.edu (replace 'x' with a 'u' to reply) |

| You say Wintell is out, but I think you should seriously consider Linux. We have used HP and Sun a lot. HP use to be our primary choice at one site and it is now Sun. At another site HP is still the primary choice, but they are considering Linux for new hardware next year. We will probably all eventually (next 1-3 years) switch to Linux. In general, I think HP (most of the time) has the fastest CPUs, but they also cost more than Suns. We have good and bad experiences with both Sun and HPs. Some of the bad experiences were recent with both and some were not recent (7 years ago) . -- "Rubin Farr" news:OdMob.91040$KB.6957-at-fe04.atl2.webusenet.com.. . > Hello all.
