It is appreciated. > Furthermore, it was really appreciated that so > many IngresCorp programmers gave up their time to help us all out. It > was just fantastic! That's the bit that astonished me. That's right. Just to be a little more precise, the next IUA conference will be Tuesday, June 9, 2009 and we will try to get a sprint organized for the preceding weekend starting Saturday June 6, 2009. Put these dates in you diary now. On a related subject we're also hoping to organize what Andrew Ross calls a boot-camp, probably circa October-ish. I am hoping that we can have two streams; one for newbies and another for expert newcomers. I suspect Marty and I feel we fall in the latter category. (We also think we might need to find a different name for it; "boot-camp" may not carry quite the right connotations in the UK. Suggestions? One possible name has been rejected already. "Code in the Communty" is a non-starter.) > I hope to see more people turn up to the next event, or at least send us > more ideas. Me too. There was some not-totally-positive feedback on Emma's blog regarding this sprint that seemed to be suggesting our focus was excessively Ingres-centric. Without conceding that I agree that's a bad thing, it would certainly be great to have more opinions, more ideas, and more coders. What was accomplished by the small band of coders we had this year tells me a larger number will produce literally unimaginable results. > And just for everyones info,. Poor Emma nearly went nuts trying to type > in all the ideas we threw onto the table, The ones we didn't get done are going to be posted on the wiki. We can't let them get away. I guess the ehancement-that-cannot-be-named won't be posted there, but it was always too big for a wiki anway. > and was introduced to Ozzie > expressions such as 'gives me the squirts'. Oh dear God. I really was hoping that one was unique to you. Roy |

Achem, I can't imagine who did that. >Without conceding that I agree that's a bad thing, it would certainly be >great to have more opinions, more ideas, and more coders. What was >accomplished by the small band of coders we had this year tells me a larger >number will produce literally unimaginable results. I'm impressed by anyone who gives up their time for such sprints and I understand completely that there are limits to what is acheivable in a limited time with a limited pool of people, so it wasn't intended as a put down. The point was to catch Emmas eye and let her think about where development effort can best be spent to encourage more widespread use. There was no intention to belittle the efforts of those involved. I actually thought my comment was rather more helpful than the debate on female programmers. I was pretty dissappointed not to get to the IUA - I was looking forward to it. Unfortunately one of my clients had a deadline that I couldn't ignore. I had practiced my heckling and everything. :-( If there was one thing I'd have suggested for the sprint weekend, it would have been an XML socket server or similar. Now aren't you glad I wasn't there? ;-) Paul |

Actually, to be clear, I did say something stupid, and it did get reported in the FT, and thanks to my friends at slashdot it'll probably appear in my epitaph. What I objected to was the mischaracterisation of what I said in the WSJ blog. I knew I was in trouble when I read the words "touchy feely" in the WSJ blog. Anyone who knows me will know that "maim and torture" is more my style. Ingres development has long had rigorous coding standards and its led to code thats easily read, understood and maintained. I've resisted the urge to respond to the ~1000 comments, that have accumulated in various places as a result of the WSJ blog; in fact Ray Fan has suggested we get a new Ingres shirt with /* no comment */ on it as part of another viral campaign. |
