Hello,

I would like to do a internship in the field of the Linux kernel.
Can someone tell me where to find a list of companies (don't matter in which
country) that employ kernel developers? Or point me to the correct
List/Group for this question?

Stefan

Surely the point of Linux that no one employs the kernel dvelopers. At
least not to do kernel development :-)

Pretty sure redhat's supplied quite a few kernel patches over the years
Most distros have.
They might not employ someone as a full time kernel developer but I imagine
the kernel is part of the job description.

You be sooooo naive... :-)

What sort of a "job" do you think Linus Torvalds has?

I thought he was an academic, in computer science.

I'm afraid that your TARDIS has experienced some technical malfunction, and
you landed in the wrong year. Mr. Torvalds hasn't been in academia for a
decade, or so.

Oh, he _was_... 10-12 years ago.

"He worked for Transmeta from February 1997 until
June 2003, and is now seconded to the Linux
Foundation, a Beaverton, Oregon-based software
consortium."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linus_Torvalds

Basically his _job_ is to coordinate the development of
Linux. Rest assured that Red Hat, IBM, HP, Novell and
many other companies have paid employees who work full
time on the Lunix kernel too.

The linux-kernel mailing list may be a starting point

Well, obviously, the correct list would be the kernel mailing list.
But as to finding a list of companies involved, why not demonstrate
your skills by going to ftp.kernel.org and looking in the directory
/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/ - using the command 'ls -lrt' to get a listing
sorted by date, then grabbing recent ChangeLog-2.6* files, such as

-rw-rw-r-- 1 536 536 19890 Oct 06 18:28 ChangeLog-2.6.16.54
-rw-rw-r-- 1 536 536 4025880 Oct 09 20:38 ChangeLog-2.6.23
-rw-rw-r-- 1 536 536 9711 Oct 10 17:54 ChangeLog-2.6.22.10
-rw-rw-r-- 1 536 536 756 Oct 12 16:47 ChangeLog-2.6.23.1
-rw-rw-r-- 1 536 536 11448 Oct 12 21:15 ChangeLog-2.6.16.55

and looking through those. I'd bet that you might find something worth
looking at by

[compton ~]$ grep Author ChangeLog-2.6.* | cut -d'@' -f2 | sort -u | wc -l
578
[compton ~]$ grep Author ChangeLog-2.6.* | cut -d'@' -f2 | sort -u | grep
-c 'de>'
58
[compton ~]$

Amazing what you can do if you look at the files.
