| Hello I have searched from help and web a solution for my problem, but this seems to be very tricky or I have wrong search terms.. I want to rename a Domino folder that contains databases to with another name, is this possible in any easy way and with this I mean that our users wouldn't have to search the databases again? For example I wan't to rename folder like this: C:\Lotus\Domino\Data\Student\...many databases... to C:\Lotus\Domino\Data\Teacher\..still many databases.. If I just rename this from Windows filesystem, our users get errormessage and they are asked to search the database, but I would like to do this without users having to search or do anything, but is it actually possible at all? Thanks in advance -Meea |

| Did the solutions you found mention "directory links"? You'd create a text file called "student.dir" in "C:\Lotus\Domino\Data" which simply contained "C:\Lotus\Domino\Data\Teacher" so that the server knows where you've moved it to. Domino 8 also has some new redirection facilities which may help if you have that version. | Hello Yes, this was one of the solutions that I found. But doesn't this mean I cannot actually rename folder, since I cannot link anything to Domino data directory? I tested this on our testserver and I couln't make this work.. Maybe I just didn't understand the text in this help.. (Domino R 7.0.2) Well, anyway now I just stopped Domino and renamed the folder and told our users to press the button OK, when they get the 'database cannot be found' error... I only wondered that isn't there any other way to do this, I would think that sometimes organisations may change their department's names etc.? Thanks anyway Meea "Lester" news:as6l94h7m3roq6cf6gs4qg14f9b3fngit0-at-4ax.com... > Did the solutions you found mention "directory links"? | I've just tried this and the problem is you end up with old and new directory names shown, though both point to the same place. So you would have changed the folder name on the file level and the users wouldn't notice since their links would work but the Database Open dialog might cause confusion. Directory links have been around for ages but are more used to allow the Domino server to access storage outside the data directory, for example on another drive letter. What is the background to the requirement? I don't think there is a simple answer here. Do you use Notes policies to control the users desktop? | Hi That is just the case I found out also, I thought I was doing something wrong, but apparently it was supposed to do so.. I haven't found any use for these directory links yet in our environment. The reason I had to change directoryname was that one of our departments changed name and they wanted to see their folder with new name when they open their databases from notes client.. The problem will be (for me..) that if other departments find this out, they want their 'directories' to be named with their new department names.. work work work for me ;o) My real problem is, that our users are so.., how could I put this nicely..., they lack of skill and they become illiterate (not native english) when any messages pops up while using notes client, so I tried or wanted to try if I can rename the folder or move databases to another folder with new name without any error popups or messages.. We do use policies, but some of these databases are in use (acl also) with special group gathered from allmost every department, that I would have to make several explicit policies just to make sure that icons wouldn't appear to people who aren't allowed to use database in question. And, with this I'm not sure, isn't it so that I cannot clean users desktop with policy? I mean even in cases if I totally move Database to another dominoserver, I can create the new icon for users, but even if I delete the old icon from policy it won't delete it from users notes desktop or bookmarks? We do allow our users to modify their own notes desktops. -Meea "Lester" news:0qkl945k0gm8fdlthhuufmhn411f46pn35-at-4ax.com... > I've just tried this and the problem is you end up with old and new > directory names shown, though both point to the same place. | Sometimes it's in the best interest for everyone to be polite but firm in saying what the user wants is not really the best solution. Have you considered a database library where users could simply go to a Notes database and click on database links for the databases they need? This would eliminate the need for users to use the Open Database dialog at all. A well managed library would have other benefits too. As you say, creating a precedent for changing the directories on the server is going to lead to more work. You could end up changing the same folder over and over again. | Hello Database library sounds interesting, I just lookd it up from help. This is something I didn't know about. Funny that I don't recall learning about database library even when attending domino admin courses. Maybe it is so obvious that if you're domino admin you should try how every database works.. if I only had the time.. )Thank you for good tip!! -Meea "Lester" news:0e8t94lvpjh60jf2mqpclkellm93eqdbr4-at-4ax.com... > Sometimes it's in the best interest for everyone to be polite but firm > in saying what the user wants is not really the best solution.
