| On my PC I have a Notes Client, Release 5.0.4. I use it to accesses my Notes Mailbox, containing messages from my employment going back many years. I retired recently. My ID is still good, but it expires in a couple months, which I think will end my Mailbox access. One of these days I want to write my memoirs, so I'd like to continue access to my Mailbox. I don't need to get to the internet or external servers via Notes, just the Mailbox on my PC. I've looked around on the web, but it's not clear to me what I need to buy, or where to buy it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. - Dave Boon |

| It's hard (or impossible) to read a Notes mail file without a key. I would suggest you export your messages to something else. Brian Boon wrote: > On my PC I have a Notes Client, Release 5.0.4. Now you should be able to login using your new ID and read your old mail. Someone better than me on administration might want to correct me if I am wrong here. /Karl |

| I believe this will work. If your local mail file or any other local files have database encryption enabled (under Database Properties), make sure you disable database encryption. Move (not copy) these files to a temporary location outside of the Notes folders: DESKTOP5.NDK (or DESKTOP5.NSF) CACHE.NDK (or CACHE.NSF) BOOKMARK.NSF Copy (not move) NOTES.INI to a temporary location outside of the Notes folders. Delete everything out of the real NOTES.INI except these 4 lines: [Notes] KitType=1 Directory=C:\Lotus\Notes\Data (or whatever) InstallType=2 Make sure there is a CR/LF after the last line in NOTES.INI Start the client, and it will walk you through the setup process. On the screen where it asks for your name, un-check the option that says "I want to connect to a Domino Server" (the terminology may differ for your version, but you should see something similar). When setup is complete, your should get a Welcome Page. If you look in the data folder, you will find that there is a new ID file called USER.ID That ID is what the client will be operating under - essentially, an anonymous account. You should also see that the Location is "Island". Now you should be able to open up any local file, as long as it is not encrypted or have Consistent ACL set. If you have any encrypted documents in your local mail file, you will need to decrypt them sometime before your old ID expires. You might need an agent to do this. Holler back if you need help with that. You may lose visibility to some documents if they happened to have any Reader fields on them. This is not a real common situation, but it can occur. Hope this helps. Tim Mohrlant Boon wrote: > On my PC I have a Notes Client, Release 5.0.4. I use it to accesses my > Notes Mailbox, containing messages from my employment going back many > years. | Hooray!!! It works!!! Tim, Many thanks for a nice clean free solution for my situation. Before I tried your suggestion I brooded, procrastinated, backed up stuff, brooded some more, then approached your suggestion with dread, thinking that I'd get myself enmeshed in a tar baby from which I'll never see my Notes mail again. But 5 minutes after I started executing your directions I was up and into my mail with a generic ID with no expiration date. I nominate you for the best Notes assist for 2007!!! Thanks, Thanks, Thanks!!! - Dave |
