CREATING A NETWORK-AWARE APPLICATION FOR IBM LOTUS EXPEDITOR | Lotus
developerWorks
This article demonstrates the network capabilities of IBM Lotus Expeditor
Client for Desktop and Devices and provides a step-by-step example of how to
make your application network aware. The Lotus Expeditor Client gives you an
extensive network management framework that can be used to make applications
network aware. It gives applications access to the network status of the
client platform as well as its connectivity to remote resources; it also
notifies an implementing application of a change in network state. The Lotus
Expeditor network framework is also extensible and provides two extension
points that applications can use to provide custom detecting and handling of
network faults.

WORKING WITH PLUG-INS IN LOTUS SAMETIME V7.5.1: CONFIGURING THE ECLIPSE
ENVIRONMENT | Lotus developerWorks
Building IBM Lotus Sametime on top of Lotus Expeditor lets you use
Eclipse as
a Plug-in Development Environment to extend Lotus Sametime's
functionality in
many ways. This article, part 1 of a four-part series, walks you through the
configuration steps to use Eclipse as a PDE for Lotus Sametime. IBM Lotus
Sametime V7.5.1 is an extensible instant messaging platform, not just a
client,
based on IBM Lotus Expeditor, the rich client platform for business
applications. Lotus Expeditor is based on the Eclipse open source, plug-in
model, rich client platform. IBM Lotus Expeditor is IBM’s universal managed
client software used to extend composite applications to laptops, desktops,
and mobile devices. It can be used to extend IBM Lotus, IBM WebSphere, IBM
Workplace, or Eclipse infrastructures. To keep the memory and disk footprint
of Lotus Sametime small, it ships with a subset of the full Lotus Expeditor
functionality.

ADD OMNIFIND SEARCH TO NOTES APPLICATIONS | Lotus developerWorks
Now you can add IBM OmniFind search functionality to a conventional Lotus
Notes database application accessed through the Notes client. Specifically,
in this article you'll learn how to call IBM's Java Search and Indexing API
(SIAPI) from within LotusScript. In addition to showing you how to display
search results as conventional text fields, this article also shows how
search results can be displayed as HTML from within the Notes client,
greatly
improving the look and feel of the end user search interface. IBM OmniFind
Enterprise Edition is a full-text enterprise search product designed to
provide superior performance, scale, and result quality with a broad
range of
data source support. Of the Lotus support, OmniFind can securely index and
search Lotus Notes databases, Lotus QuickPlace®, and Lotus Domino
Document Manager.

BUILDING AN ACRONYM EXPANDER PLUG-IN FOR IBM LOTUS SAMETIME V7.5.1 |
Lotus developerWorks
Use extension points in IBM Lotus Sametime V7.5.1 to build a plug-in that
allows you to show the expanded version of acronyms. Acronyms are part
of our
everyday language. It seems that the world is in a big hurry as we frugally
save keystrokes by using acronyms when we write emails and instant messages.
Common acronyms such as IMHO (in my humble opinion), TTYL (talk to you
later),
and BRB (be right back) are popular, and new acronyms appear constantly. In
this article, we show you how to create a useful Acronym Expander
plug-in for
IBM Lotus Sametime Connect V7.5.1. You also learn how to exploit the
com.ibm.collaboration.realtime.messages.MessageHan dlerListener extension
point,
which lets you create a listener class that listens for Lotus Sametime
messages before they are sent to the Lotus Sametime user. This listener
class
can provide mediation functionality; in our case, the mediation function is
the expansion of an acronym.

ENABLING CALENDAR GHOSTING IN IBM LOTUS NOTES V8 | Lotus developerWorks
This tip introduces the calendar ghosting feature and provides instructions
for enabling it. Calendar ghosting allows users to interact with unprocessed
entries right on their calendar. Calendar ghosting is an exciting new
feature
that extends a user’s ability to manage unprocessed meeting notices in IBM
Lotus Notes V8. In version 7.0.x and prior releases of Lotus Notes, users
needed to open unprocessed calendar notices such as meeting invitations or
reschedule notices from their inbox in order to respond. The inbox can be
flooded with hundreds of email messages daily, and as a result, users
may miss
some meeting invitations or reschedule notices. To solve this problem and to
provide more flexibility, Lotus Notes V8 allows unprocessed meeting
invitations and reschedule notices to show up directly on a user’s calendar.
Users conveniently can act on these invitations and reschedule notices as if
they are in the inbox. Because the notices are not processed, but show up on
the calendar, they are called ghosts. Ghosts do not book busy time.

Introducing developerWorks spaces | Web developerWorks

Community topics pave the way for a new twist on developer collaboration --
The developerWorks spaces initiative represents a new way for people to
create, discover, integrate, or present information, ideas, business
transactions, news, and even themselves to others through the global
environment of the Internet. Meet the first phase of the project, called
"community topics," and find out how you can get involved.

A virtual office: IBM Lotus Sametime chatting and Second Life | Lotus
developerWorks

Bridge Second Life and Lotus Sametime using a Sametime bot -- You've
heard the
hype about Second Life, and how it's becoming the environment of choice for
.... well ... everything, it seems. But work can't stop just because you want
to hang out. Fortunately, the IBM Lotus Sametime Software Development Kit
(SDK) and Second Life scripting make it possible to combine the two. This
tutorial shows you how to create a Sametime bot that listens for
conversations
in Second Life and relays them to your IBM Lotus Sametime Connect client or
vice-versa, making it possible to let people alert you when you're
needed, but
you're not "in-world" as well as to be in-world without missing important
conversations.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Patterns-based design and development for architects, Part 1: Using
design patterns | Architecture developerWorks

(Got patterns?) - Design patterns are one of the best ways to share design
ideas. They give software architects and designers a tool, or a language, to
capture their experiences by solving common recurring problems in a
methodical
way. In this two-part series you explore ways to use design patterns to
solve
your everyday design problems. This tutorial uses a railway reservation
system
case study to illustrate the design problems that can arise while
architecting
a system. Take this tutorial to learn how to use design patterns to solve
problems and improve your own designs.

In pursuit of code quality: Beware the tight couple! | Java developerWorks

Use the Dependency Inversion Principle to untangle tightly coupled code --
You know tight coupling is bad news and you really want to avoid it in your
designs -- but the question is how. This month, learn how to recognize a
tightly coupled system and then disentangle it using the Dependency
Inversion
Principle. In the past year or so of writing this column, I have introduced
many tools and techniques that you can use to improve the quality of
your code.
I've showed you how to apply code metrics to monitor the attributes of your
code base; how to use test frameworks like TestNG, FIT, and Selenium to
verify
application functionality; and how to use extension frameworks like XMLUnit
and StrutsTestCase (and powerful helpers like Cargo and DbUnit) to
extend the
reach of your testing framework.

Debugging with the Eclipse Platform | Open source developerWorks

Use Eclipse for debugging your software projects -- Find out how to use the
built-in debugging features in the Eclipse Platform for debugging software
projects. Debugging is something programmers can't avoid. There are many
ways
to go about it, but it essentially comes down to finding the code
responsible
for a bug. For example, one of the most common errors in Linux
applications is
known as a segmentation fault. This occurs when a program attempts to access
memory not allocated to it and terminates with a segmentation violation. To
fix this kind of error, you need to find the line of code that triggers the
behavior. Once the line of code in question has been found, it is also
useful
to know the context in which the error occurs, and the associated values,
variables, and methods. The use of a debugger makes finding this information
quite simple.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Eclipse project management with JFeature | Open source developerWorks

Record requirements, write tests and generate reports using JFeature -- Just
about every project needs a project manager (even if that happens to be you,
the developer). And since all the items that accompany projects can get
out of
hand and lost in all the hustle and bustle, project managers need good
software to manage all the requirements and to-dos in their projects.
Eclipse
is an excellent platform for such software, and JFeature is an Eclipse
plug-in
that has the features project managers look for. This tutorial shows you how
to use the JFeature plug-in for Eclipse to its fullest potential. You'll
learn
how to get up to speed using JFeature for your project management needs.

Understanding Web Services specifications, Part 6: WS-Interoperability |
SOA and Web services developerWorks

The goal of Web services is to enable communication between different
software
and hardware systems. These systems typically differ in both their hardware
and software configurations. These differences have been overcome
through the
definition of standard protocols, such as those employed in building Web
services. Occasionally, incompatibility issues arise even when using these
standard protocols, which can lead to interoperability problems. This
tutorial,
Part 6 of the "Understanding Web Services specifications" series,
explains the
nature and origin of Web service interoperability problems. This
tutorial also
introduces you to the WS-I Basic Profile, which is a set of guidelines Web
services should adhere to in order to achieve optimum interoperability.

Explore powerful UNIX writer's tools | AIX and UNIX developerWorks

Using new, open source equivalents of the classic UNIX Writer's Workbench --
Long ago, UNIX® had a proprietary package called the Writer's Workbench

Developers, administrators, and technical writers who used to use this
package
in their work deeply miss it--its powerful capabilities made the UNIX
workstation a preferred environment for document editing and proofreading.
Today, many new implementations of those tools are available for all UNIX
systems, and you can also find open source equivalents of the key WWB tools.

Thinking XML: Microformats the XML way | XML developerWorks

Put microformats in perspective -- when are they a good choice? -- You might
have heard about microformats, a way to embed small, specialized information
within standard formats. In fact, microformats come in two types: elemental
microformats, which are often quite useful, and compound microformats, which
are often quite problematic. Learn about a basic approach to avoid the hacks
in some compound microformats by virtue of the structure of the Web.
XML, and
other natural data representation technologies such as JSON, are just as
viable as many of their counterparts in microformats.

Perspectives on grid: Application programming and extreme-scale data
infrastructure support in WebSphere Extended Deployment | Grid
computing/WebSphere developerWorks

A closer look at application patterns -- IBM WebSphere Extended Deployment
(Extended Deployment) is infrastructure software for application servers,
which many associated with the ability to optimize and lower costs of an
application infrastructure, prioritize resources for use by the most
important
applications, and improve availability. It does this via virtualization and
intelligent workload management. But WebSphere Extended Deployment also
contains capabilities to effectively manage large amounts of data in
extreme-
scale data fabrics via ObjectGrid and to run additional application types
beyond OLTP. Here, we take a closer look at WebSphere Extended Deployment's
ObjectGrid and Java batch programming support.

DB2 and Ruby on Rails, Part 2: DB2 and pureXML with Ruby on Rails |
Information Management/Open source developerWorks

Native XML support of pureXML with Ruby on Rails -- a powerful
combination for
Web application development -- XML is one of the most common data
interchange
formats on the Web today. DB2 support for pureXML, combined with the parsing
and generating XML APIs (REXML) available to Ruby on Rails, provides a
powerful combination for Web application development. The native XML support
in DB2 data servers brings flexibility for storing semi-structured,
hierarchical XML documents alongside relational data, through its hybrid
database engine compiler and parsers, for both SQL and XQuery. The second
article in the Ruby on Rails series demonstrates how to utilize pureXML
in our
Team Room example from the first article.

Seam Remoting and Ajax4jsf seamlessly fuse client and server -- JSF's
component-based methodology encourages abstraction, but most Ajax
implementations interfere with it by exposing the underlying HTTP exchange.
In this final article in the Seamless JSF series, Dan Allen shows you how to
use the Seam Remoting API and Ajax4jsf components to communicate with
managed
beans on the server as if they were local to the browser. You'll learn how
surprisingly easy it is to leverage Ajax as a natural improvement on JSF's
event-driven architecture and how to do so without compromising the JSF
component model.

What I think?

Why does it install on some machines running W2K and not on
others?

I realize that it's officially not supposed to run on W2K but it does,
that is, if you can get it to install.

Is it a memory issue or what?

Thanks!!!
