Default Way to "break" the connection? So that moving an email out of sent to a folder, we can then delete the remaining copy in sent?

One behaviour that I'd forgotten about in LN and that drives me nuts
is the very thing which I'm sure many people find it excellent for -
the way emails are interconnected.

And for the most part, I also like this feature. But where I don't is
in how I've developed a system over the years in Outlook that I can't
use here.

My preference is to keep my sent folder completely empty. Once I send
a msg, in Outlook I then move it out of sent into the inbox or file.

A big annoyance, _for_me_, is that sure I can move the emails but it
leaves behind a copy in the sent. And if I delete that msg from the
sent, it then turns around and deletes any and all copies I have
anywhere.

Is there a way to completely sever the connectivity so that when I
move the msg, the entire thing gets moved out into a folder of my
choice?

Thanks. Much appreciated. Hope it's alright to post these types of
questions here. I'm under quite a bit of pressure at work, which
always seems to the case now and it would be nice if I could go back
to a system that works perfectly for me. Cheers. D

The reason it works like it does is because "Sent" is a view - not a
folder. A view has a selection criteria, while a folder has to have
docs moved into it.

Starting with Notes 5 (I think) the Sent view will exclude documents
that have a field called "ExcludeFromView" with a value of "S". You
could create a simple button for the Sent view to add that field. Of
course, then you'd have a custom mail design, so you'd need to make sure
you are not inheriting from the template.

Also starting with Notes 6 (I think), when you delete a document from
Sent, a dialog asks if you want to Remove from the view or Delete from
the database. As I recall, later versions even allow you to save the
answer so it will always do the action without asking.

But then, if you don't want anything in "Sent" why don't you just not
look at it? Or remove it from the mail file design?

Hope this helps.

Oh, phew. Thanks. Going from memory, I think ours is v6.4, or
something. I'll check when I get to work in a few hours.

Ya know, I really hate "justifying". When something works, it
works, and we adopt systems that _for_us_!

Sent is important. Not look at it, indeed! I keep tabs on it almost
as much as the inbox. I move everything out of sent and either put
into the inbox (which LN won't let me do, for god's sakes!! or I
file away). The sent folder keeps things safely till I can do the
vital task of weeding out and moving. In Outlook, so easy. I'd move
out original emails to a file folder and slide the one with my
response into the inbox and then related emails get filed. I only
keep the _latest_ file in thread in the inbox.. So many times,
people respond to you without including any background whatsoever;
something that is even easier to do since LN requires that one
_actively_ select "Reply with history". So 9 out of 10 emails come
back with just their response, even worse than Outlook which makes
life so much more interesting thanks to LN!

Anyway, when people tell you something that they need and you respond
like that, that's just so wrong. We do things because they work esp.
when one really needs to find workarounds.

>Hope this helps.

Yes, thank you! I'll give it a try. The person I'm replacing has the
most interruptions out of anyone in the group and also, I suspect,
receives the most emails second only to the boss. That just seems to
be the nature of his position (thank God he's coming back next Monday!
). I sincerely hope I get a long break before having to float for
him .

His inbox and sent folders are still horrendous despite my having gone
through the inbox and the beginning of the sent folder very
thoroughly. Being new to the organization made it especially
important to quickly go through all the inbox and the top of the sent
folder to make sure no surprises were going to come up and bite me on
the nost. There were a few that had that potential. I now have my
account email in LN so will be able to emulate Outlook as much as
possible with these workarounds. I want to only keep what's important
and delete what isn't _without_ having that action delete what it
shouldn't.

Thanks.
