| U2logic announces that it is has released new plug-ins for the Eclipse IDE. Prior to this release and for the past 2.5 years the software has been free for all Universe and Unidata programmers and users, that is no longer the case. If you are using the free version you can continue to do so for the near future. We would encourage you upgrade to our supported version as a paid subscriber. The XLr8Resizer plug-in which was new for us this year is available as well with a separate your paid subscription. This plug-in requires no downloaded software or accounts to run. You can resize any number of clients or machines with out that pesky per Universe or Unidata user licensing. We license by workstation for all of our tool plug-ins. Our XLr8Editor runs on Universe version 9.6 or greater or on Unidata version 6.1 or greater. We do not require any software to be downloaded on to you U2 machines. This software runs on most workstations running Windows, Mac, or Linux. This release highlights: - Official external release with licensing and new plug-in names. - Renamed plug-ins and ids. - Licensing for all plug-ins. - Resizer improvements. - Various improvements and bug fixes. Release note: v2.1.2 - August 12, 2008 - Resizer - UniData version: - GetStats info obtained from Guide and FILE.STAT reports. Includes improvements to overall resizer plug-in architecture and function to bring UD and UV versions in sync. - Improvements to MEMRESIZE properties section UI. - Improvements to RESIZE properties section UI. - Overflow columns highlighted in red. - Main heading improved. - Old registration wizard entry removed from Eclipse "new wizards" page. - U2Core - attempt to uninstall old versions of main plug-in to prevent conflicts with new plug-in names. v2.1.1 - August 8, 2008 - Internal test release before the 2.1.2 release. |

| Reminds me of the story of how Ken Sims got BASIC into wide spread use - gave it away as a "trial", and then one day ... :-) When googling to see if it was Ken Sims or Simms, just "discovered" this, which may be interesting to anyone interested in "history". For instance, I had always suspected the OASIS had a "pick link", and was surpised to see this noted http://www.microdata-alumni.org/historical.htm On Aug 13, 8:08*am, "dave...@gmail.com" > U2logic announces that it is has released new plug-ins for the Eclipse > IDE. *Prior to this release and for the past 2.5 years the software > has been free for all Universe and Unidata programmers and users, that > is no longer the case. |

| Hi Ross Thanks for that, I had an enjoyable few minutes reviving memories. Interesting girls and law suits were issues from the beginning :-) I was particularly please to see the CMC brochure which confirmed a statement that I have made and seen disputed on several occasions. The Reality 3.0 release was visibly faster than 2.4d because of the introduction of firmware. It states that several key elements were moved from core to firmware in the Royale release. Obviously where the confusion has come is that this was in addition to the already existing firmware. It was also about the time that base system core memory requirement went from 2k to 9k. We had a major fight with AWA over the supply of 16k of core with a cartridge tape to our first two clients. Since the system wanted 9k we reasoned that 7k would not run the 5 users no matter that it was in the price book - I well remember the allocated salesman (women were typists in those days, the Cindy Hubands of the world arrived with Wicat and Lionel Singer) Dave Mitchell saying "it's in the price book, I sell it". In the end AWA had to provide a free upgrade for the systems to 32k of core, a half inch tape unit, and a 300lpm printer to replace the cartridge tape and the flimsy dot matrix printer. The cartridge was far from flimsy but one client still managed to get it in upside down and backwards - the sight of an engineer taking to a $120,000 machine with a crow bar to get it out was terrifying. The same client subsequently turned so many half inch tapes into mylar boot laces by mis-threading and hitting the start button that the engineers gave him a supply of tape start tabs and showed him how to shorten and re do the tape. I also remember the shocked faces of two Pick Systems visitors when I showed them PQN procs at AWA. Now I understand the companies had split and weren't telling each other anything. | Ah, that was our friend Dick who came up with the idea of the BASIC bomb. Instead of just saying in large letters "THIS PRODUCT IS PAST ITS TRIAL" iirc it switched 1 (one) and 0 (zero) internally in the run time. Made for some interesting phone calls. | Ken has too much integrity, and too much foresight to do such an thing; it was, indeed, Dick's idea. There may be some out there who remember Lou Pizzagoni's (sp?) thoughts on the matter. My recollection is that it would randomly disturb the results of multiplications, and since every number in BASIC was stored as an integer scaled to 10000 (nominally) times the value of the variable, there were a lot of multiplications (and divisions) by 10000 performed by the BASIC runtime. -- frosty Chandru Murthi wrote: > Ah, that was our friend Dick who came up with the idea of the BASIC > bomb. | That should have read "Ken had..." of course. -- frosty frosty wrote: > Ken has too much integrity, and too much foresight to do such an > thing; it was, indeed, Dick's idea. I'm glad my original skepticism was justified. http://tinyurl.com/69qjuc http://tinyurl.com/5l2u66 Let's look at it this way. The companies that beta-tested the software got to do so for free. Now that the software is marketable, anyone who wants to use it can pay for it. I actually don't have a problem with this common model - all drug dealers give free samples to the kids ... um, maybe that's a bad example... Seriously, I justprefer open disclosure when this is obviously the model the company has had in mind for the last two years. The software might be great. I never tried it because I've always been concerned about the lack of congruity in the model description, and the possibility, now realized, of a bait n switch with a much more expensive tool after someone gets used to it. This approach to business will prevent me from trying anything this company offers. YMMV T |

| Tony is right. This is clearly a ploy or 'bait and switch'. Also, displaying the defensive temper probably won't help sales. IMO, Jeff |

| Jeff, Those users who downloaded the free version can continue to use for as long as they wish. Those users who would like to upgrade or have not used it, will have to get a subscription license to use the software. Regards, Doug www.u2logic.com |

| Now that I stuck my neck out, I'd like to know: where on your website is the pricing info? All the downloads I see still say "free" Chandru news:c16bbf5a-dd6d-42f5-803a-9cea57c9e8cd-at-8g2000hse.googlegroups.com... > Jeff, > > Those users who downloaded the free version can continue to use for as > long as they wish.
