Setting up a DNS server is a nontrivial exercise, but if you do succeed and direct your Windows host to use that DNS server then yes. Unless you plan to have literally dozens of machines on your network then populating the hosts files is still the best way to resolve names and addresses. |

If you need to ask, you have a lot of reading to do! I highly recommend the current edition of "DNS and Bind" published by O'Reilly & Associates http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/dns5/. Configuring the PC's is fairly easy if you use DHCP. If you don't already use DHCP, that's another server you have to configure and a lot more reading to do. The last time I set up a DNS server I was fighting, in addition to my own ignorance, software that didn't work very well and documentation that failed to tell me what I needed to know and was just plain wrong in places. This was thirteen years ago so your mileage may vary! RFC-1032, 1033, 1034, 1035 and 1183 or their successors should also make interesting reading. |
